Fiala and Giannelli Win Super Series SGs

Ogden, UT, Feb. 27–U.S. racer Jakub Fiala (Breckenridge, CO) andCanadian Mike Giannelli each picked up wins in Super Series Super Graces Sunday at Snowbasin. The races were part of the Super SeriesFinals.
The weather held out to get in both races on the course which will hostspeed races in the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. A downhill race waspostponed Friday due to snowfall and poor visibility.
Fiala posted a winning time of 1:225.19 in the second race, ahead ofCanadians Chad Mullen and Cameron Culbert, who tied with a time of1:25.26.
It was a nice comeback for Fiala, who was a DNF in the first race aftermissing a gate on the second jump.
“The course was definitely softer today,” said Fiala, who has beenskiing on the World Cup Tour this season. “It just got too warm today,so it was pretty difficult. The first run was alot more open and alotless rhythm. The second run was alot more rhythmical.”
In the opening race, Canadians took the top two spots with Giannellirecording a winning time of 1:22.03. He was followed by Stefan Overgaardin 1:22.18 and American Travis Svensrud (Bozeman, MT) was third in1:22.31. It was Svensrud’s second podium of the weekend as he was secondSaturday in the final downhill.
Brett Fischer (Winter Park, CO), who won a downhill here Saturday, wassixth in the second SG and eighth in the first.
Culbert, who was fourth in the first race, won the overall Super Seriestitle for the season with 302 points. Fischer was second with 274 andSvensrud placed third with 232.
The Super Series is the U.S. portion of the Nor Am Cup.
