Aspen, CO
The Aspen Skiing Company, operator of four resorts, has spent years engaging the local community in its planning process, but may find itself penalized for trying to be too politically correct. It has a new plan to redevelop the base of Buttermilk in a way that would add 72 units of affordable housing for employees, a new children’s center, new retail and rental facilities and an expanded parking lot. But a proposal to connect Buttermilk to Aspen Mountain with a gondola has run into early opposition from at least one local environmental group. The plans are still under review by local and federal agencies.
