The U.S. Forest Service and the townspeople of Klamath Falls support the construction of what would be the state’s second largest ski area, but 22 environmental groups, including the Oregon Natural Resources Council and the Audubon Society, oppose any construction in an old-growth forest reserve at Pelican Butte. A private developer wants to build a $37-million four-seasons resort that would have a gondola, eight chairlifts and a vertical drop of 3,800 feet-the third-highest lift-served vertical in the U.S. The site is located between Klamath National Wildlife Refuge, Crater Lake National Park and Sky Lakes Wilderness. A Forest Service decision is due shortly on the ski area draft environmental impact statement.
