GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, GERMANY – (USST News Bureau Release) – Scott Macartney (Redmond, WA) had the top result among U.S. skiers Saturday, tying for 22nd place in sunny, 45-degree weather in the second of two downhills run as the World Cup season resumed.
Erik Guay won the downhill – the first victory by a Canadian man since Cary Mullen at the Aspen Winternational in 1994 – with a time of 1:56.80 over the 3.5K Kandahar speed run. Slovenian Andrej Jernan, who won Friday, was second with Swiss Didier Cuche third.
WCSN.com will broadcast same-day video streaming at 9 p.m. ET.
Macartney, running third, had a time of 1:58.70 while Steven Nyman (Provo, UT) tied for 26th in 1:58.90. Marco Sullivan (Squaw Valley, CA) was 33rd and Erik Fisher (Middleton, ID) 35th while JJ Johnson (Park City, UT) didn’t finish his run and Bode Miller (Bretton Woods, NH) did not start because of a sore neck.
“Tough day,” said DH Head Coach Chris Brigham. “And the conditions were better than yesterday; we got some cold, a little freeze, overnight, so we missed an opportunity to do better…and we’re trying to figure out why. We expected a lot more than what we got today.”
A bright spot of the day, he said, was Fisher earning the Warsteiner Best Young Athlete Award, presented to the top finisher who was born in 1985 or later. Fisher’s 35th was the best of that group “and he got to be up on the victory podium, get a trophy and some cash and be part of that scene, so that was pretty cool. Erik’s had a good season, and he’s already assured himself of World Cup starts next year because he’s won the NorAm downhill and super G titles.”
The men have a slalom Sunday and live interval timing will be available at http://livetiming.usskiteam.com with the first run beginning at 3:30 a.m. ET and the second at 7 a.m. In addition, WCSN.com will have same-day video streaming at 12 noon ET.
