In 1988, Otto Brothers Brewing Company set up shop in one of Wilson, Wyoming’s original log cabins and became the state’s first new brewery in 35 years. The brewhouse was “out back” in a small Swiss-style chalet designed, constructed and equipped by Charlie and Ernie Otto and partner Don Frank.
The first year, 100 barrels of ale were handcrafted from pure mountain well-water, fine barley malts, select fresh hops and a specially cultivated fermenting ale yeast. Little by little, word got out. Skiers from nearby Jackson began stopping in for pints of Moose Juice Stout, Teton Ale, Old Faithful Ale and special seasonal brews. Some even took “growlers” (little glass jugs) to go.
Otto Brothers produces 2,000 barrels of beer a year, most out of a new 6,000-square-foot facility over Teton Pass in Victor, Idaho. Distribution extends to Colorado, Idaho and Montana. But the best place to indulge is still the original brewhouse in Wilson. Six handles. 24 chairs. Infinite good cheer.
