St. Anton, Austria Feb. 10 (AP)–Practice for a men’s World Cup downhill race was canceled today because of heavy winds and too much snow.

The International Ski Federation said the downhill and Super G races scheduled for next Saturday and Sunday will go on if the skiers get their practice runs on Friday.

Depending on the weather, the organizers are also considering postponing the downhill for Sunday, and Super G for Monday. Or holding two Super Gs, which use shorter piste, over the weekend.

Runaway World Cup leader, Austrian star Hermann Maier, was hoping to extend his overall lead in the standings with a couple of victories over the weekend in his two favorite disciplines.

The race organizers said swirling winds and fresh snow prevented the overnight preparation of the 3,200-meter Karl Schranz piste for practice.

A succession of both men’s and women’s World Cup races have been delayed or canceled in recent weeks because of weather conditions.

One of the additional Super Gs under consideration by organizers is the one that was canceled in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, on Jan. 30.
