MUNICH, Germany – Germany’s skiing star Hilde Gerg does not need surgery on her injured left knee and is hoping to be back before the World Championship in February.

The reigning World Cup super-G champion suffered “an isolated rupture” of her anterior cruciate ligament, team doctor Ernst-Otto Muench said after Gerg had an MRI in Munich on Monday.

“Surgery is not necessary at this moment and will not be done,” Muench said. He said there was a good chance that Gerg could be on slopes by mid-January.

The World Championship is slated for Feb. 2-16 in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

Gerg was seeking her third straight World Cup win this season when she missed a gate and slipped near the top of the course during a downhill race in Lake Louise, Alberta, on Saturday. She clutched her left knee and abandoned the race.

It’s the same leg Gerg broke two years ago. She had a rod from her leg surgically removed earlier this year that had helped mend the tibia bone.

The 27-year-old German has 17 World Cup wins, including five downhills.
