Beaver Creek, CO, Nov. 24–Swiss skier Didier Plaschy, who collected a slalom victory in the $100,000 Super Series in Breckenridge a week ago, moved up two levels Tuesday to capture his first World Cup victory, winning the Chevy Truck Birds of Prey men’s slalom at Beaver Creek by .99 over reigning World Cup SL champion Thomas Stangassinger of Austria. No U.S. ski racer made the top-30 cutoff for the second run.
Plaschy, 26, the first-run leader who swept the second Super Series SL in Breckenridge, said he considered retiring three years ago but decided against it. He was timed Tuesday in 1:24.69 with Stangassinger second in 1:25.68. Matteo Nana of Italy completed the top-3 podium in 1:25.79. Coverage of the race will be broadcast Sunday (Nov. 28) at 2:30 p.m. EST on ESPN.
“I’m not happy, not at all. The guys tried hard, they did, but it’s very disappointing,” U.S. men’s Head Coach Bill Egan told reporters. “The best word is ‘pathetic’….It’s a long season and we’ll have to regroup, and we will.”
Starters Wednesday in the GS include: Bode Miller (Franconia, NH), ErikSchlopy (Park City, UT), Chip Knight (New Canaan, CT), Dane Spencer (Boise,ID), Thomas Vonn (Newburgh, NY) and Daron Rahlves (Truckee, CA).
After a two-day break for Thanksgiving and downhill training, the ChevyTruck Birds of Prey resume Friday with men’s downhill. The four races-in-six-days schedule concludes Sunday with super G.
