With Chestnut perched high on a bluff overlooking the expansive Mississippi near Galena, Ill., it looks like you could ski right to the edge of the river. “Nice lodge and breathtaking views,” gushes one reader. Readers also give Chestnut high marks for its lifts, terrain variety, challenge, lodging and dining. In addition to 17 trails, a 475-foot drop, six chairlifts and an expansive seven-acre terrain park, the resort, located on top of the mountain, boasts one of the best beginner areas in the heartland.

The Latest

A triple chairlift was added to the beginner area, and Chestnut will be celebrating it 45th year in business this season making it one of the oldest resorts in the heartland.

The Deal

From Nov. 26 (the projected opening day) through Nov. 30, lift tickets are $10 daily; Dec. 1-17, the day’s date is the lift ticket rate for that day. chestnutmtn.com; 800-397-1320
