Portillo, Chile, Sept. 13–More big snow for Portillo Ski Resort this weekend. A series of storms dropped an additional 15-19 inches, bringing the total nine-day snowfall to 106-inches and the base depth to approximately 12 feet.
“The snow gave way to sunny skies on Saturday,” said Juan Guillermo Breiding of Ski Portillo. “We had plenty of skiers enjoying the snow this weekend.”
However, more heavy snow closed the resort’s access road Sunday afternoon and Monday morning, although sources at Portillo expect it to open sometime today.
The new snow allowed for the mountain to remain 100 percent open through the weekend and presumably through the end of the season. Only two lifts, Roca Jack and Canario, remained closed temporarily due to avalanche danger and should open later this week.
The forecast for the week in Portillo calls for cloudy skies and a chance of flurries with temperatures hanging around the mid-30.
September will mark a strong finish to Portillo’s season, which winds down the first week of October.
