Spencer Takes Career-Best 10th in Swiss GS

Adelboden, Switzerland Jan. 5, 2002 (USSA)–Dane Spencer (Boise, ID), continuing his impressive recovery from back and knee problems, grabbed his first World Cup top-10 Saturday as he finished 10th in a giant slalom behind Swiss skier Didier Cuche, who won by more than a second in 2:23.99. Bode Miller (Franconia, NH) was 13th and Erik Schlopy (Park City, UT) was 27th.
Outdoor Life Network will air coverage at 8 p.m. Mon., Jan. 7.
With the top-10 finish, Spencer became the 11th U.S. alpine skier to attain the highest levels of Olympic selection criteria (either top-10 World Cup or Gold Cup win).
Dane did a great job today,” said Coach Jesse Hunt. “He fought his way down and attacked a difficult course the first run and then came back with the third fastest second run. The first run course was set with a lot of speed into a tough section. It was difficult to carry speed on the course, but Dane did a really great job in inspecting the course so he was prepared.”
Spencer was 17th after the first run, but was able to make a big jump with his second run starting position. Miller, meanwhile, moved up from 16th to 13th.
Cuche’s win was enough to move him ahead of Miller for second in the overall World Cup standings behind leader Stephan Eberharter, who was eighth.
The men are in action again Sunday in Adelboden with a slalom.
