Best Restaurants If you’re on a budget, head to Olympiahaus cafe and konditorei for Nurnberg sausages, sauerkraut and boiled potatoes. For an authentic taste of Bavarian tradition, Gasthof Fraundorfer serves up Bavarian evenings with folk dances and regional specialties, such as shoulder of veal and spaeztle. There is no better way to celebrate a special night on the town than at Reindl’s Partenkirchnerhof Restaurant, serving gourmet cuisine. Try the elk steak flambe in a wild cherry/cognac sauce served with chipotle spaeztle.

Best Nightspot The Spielbank Casino requires a tie and doesn’t permit sneakers. In return you get blackjack, roulette, poker, slot machines and perfect cocktails in an elegant setting.

Outstanding Feature The whole of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a showcase for extravagant exterior frescoes, in an Old Bavarian style known as “Luftmalerei.” Some feature faux architectural details, and many depict people engaged in the house-owner’s trade.

Getting There 50 minutes from Innsbruck’s international airport; 90 minutes from Munich’s international airport. Rent cars in Munich, not Innsbruck, for the best deals (starting at $250/week; request chains). G-P is served by high-speed trains from all over Europe.
