Park City, Utah, Feb. 21, 2001–Six countries were represented at the 14th annual Huntsman Cup at ParkCity Mountain Resort. After placing first in super G, giant slalom and slalom, mono skier ChrisWaddell (Park City, Ut) won the overall for the men’s division and 16-year old stand up skierAllison Jones (Colorado Springs, CO) secured the Cup in the women’s division.

The competitions were different in years past with added challenges and races. This year theHuntsman Cup saw the return of the super-G race that had been missing over the past couple ofyears. Competition took place on Payday ski run. The giant slalom course also was extended withthe start taking place all the way on top over at the Eagle lift.

“The field of athletes has really improved from last year,” said Head Disabled Alpine CoachEwald Zirbisegger. “The club athletes have really stepped up and gained points close to those ofour national team. There were better performances by racers than last year … their maturity … theyoung racers are knocking on the door of the national athletes.”

“This was the best Huntsman Cup we’ve ever had,” said Zirbisegger. “There were wonderful snowconditions, super weather and good course lengths for this great event.”

Over sixty-five competitors demonstrated skill and athletic ability during the week, as they utilizedmonoskis, outriggers and other adapted equipment to challenge each other for the fastest timesof the series. Each year, the best disabled skiers in the world, including the U.S. Disabled SkiTeam, converge on Park City, Utah for the National Ability Center’s Huntsman Cup races. Thisyear’s field of competitors also included skiers from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Swedenand South Africa. The Huntsman Cup is in its 14th year, and is part of the Utah Winter Games.
