Val d’Isere, France (AP)–Strong winds of up to 45 mph forced the cancelation Friday of a women’s super G World Cup race.
A second super G Saturday and a giant slalom on Sunday are scheduled to go ahead as planned.
Friday’s super G was to have taken place on the Oreiller Killy course on which Swiss skier Silvano Beltrametti crashed last Saturday during a men’s World Cup downhill. The 22-year-old skier was paralyzed from the chest down after slicing through safety netting into a bordering forest.
Event spokesman Yves Perret said Friday’s cancelation was unrelated to Beltrametti’s crash.
Friday’s race was to have been the second super G of the World Cup season. Germany’s Petra Haltmayr won the first super G in Lake Louise, Canada, earlier this month.
The two super G races and the giant slalom were transferred to Val d’Isere from the French ski resort at Megeve because of a lack of snow.
