MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN, Calif. – Thanks to the cooperation of many different organizations in the Mammoth Lakes Area, twelve soldiers who were seriously wounded while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan will travel to Mammoth Mountain Ski Area to learn new ways to enjoy the slopes through the Wounded Warrior Project. The event will take place from February 4-8, 2008, with on-slope activities taking place February 5-7, 2008.

This event will mark the third occurrence of Wounded Warriors at Mammoth Mountain. Warriors can enjoy a full winter experience through skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, dog sledding and scenic snowcat rides. The Wounded Warriors and their family members will be provided these opportunities free of charge. Their experience includes transportation from the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, lodging at The Westin Monache Resort, use of adaptive equipment and individualized on-snow instruction.

“This event is a great way to put any personal politics we have aside and focus on thanking these brave soldiers for the sacrifice they’ve made for their country. Our main goal is to help these soldiers with their life-long process of adapting to their new disabilities,” said Kathy Copeland, Executive Director of Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra.

These twelve soldiers have sustained an array of disabilities while serving their country, such as multiple limb amputations, severe burns and nerve injuries. The Wounded Warriors program is designed to help these soldiers learn new ways to enjoy the activities they used to participate in before sustaining these injuries.

The Wounded Warriors project is made possible thanks to the generous support of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra, Disabled Sports USA, The Westin Monache Resort and the Mammoth Lakes Community.
