Editor’s Note: Keystone’s announcement to open on Saturday, October 12 was followed only a few hours later by an announcement that Arapahoe Basin will be open from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on October 11, 2019, therefore winning the annual Race to Open. The following article has been edited to reflect this.
Keystone Resort announced this morning that they are set to open for the 2019-2020 winter ski season on Saturday, Oct. 12. This early opening is the result of Keystone’s investment in its snowmaking infrastructure and new automated snowmaking system, along with early season temperatures. These two factors combined have set up Keystone to be the second ski resort in North America to open for the 2019-2020 winter season.

“Our mountain operations team put in a tremendous amount of hard work to get our new snowmaking system ready for Keystone’s early opening,” said Jody Churich, Keystone’s new vice president and general manager in a press release.
This investment has allowed Keystone to now offer one of the longest ski seasons in the United States. Skiers and snowboards will be able to access skiable terrain via the River Run Gondola and the Montezuma Express. Access for skiing and riding will be offered from the top of the Dercum Mountain to the bottom of the Montezuma Express with skiers being able to download the River Run Gondola at the end of the day.
