Bundled pass products like the Ikon and Epic passes seem to be working well for the ski industry, so why not apply the same model to something else near and dear to skiers’ hearts: the environment.
1% for the Planet, a global organization with a mission to promote smart environmental giving, used the increasingly popular bundled ski resort pass model to create and launch the My Planet Pass, a pass product to encourage people to support environmental organizations through annual membership to 1% for the Planet, as well as partner nonprofits like Protect our Winters, TreeSisters, National Forest Foundation, Save the Waves Coalition, and Slow Food.
Started in in 2002 by Patagonia founder and passionate environmentalist Yvon Chouinard and Blue Ribbons Flies founder Craig Matthews, 1% for the Planet has raised more than $175 million through individual members pledging to give back 1% of their salary annually to environmental nonprofits.
“We all know that our planet needs more support than it’s currently receiving,” said Marc Randolph, co-founder of Netflix, and 1% for the Planet board member in a press release. “That’s why it’s so important to see organizations like 1% for the Planet engaging individuals in new ways and encouraging them to support the environmental issues that impact all of us. Without continued evolution and innovation, the environmental movement will never deliver the results we need.”
Through the My Planet Pass, members will not only have the opportunity to give back, but also receive in return. Pass holders will get access to exclusive member benefits, including gear and goods from partner nonprofits beyond what is available to the general public.

“By packaging environmental giving as a product that many consumers are already used to purchasing, whether it is a ski pass or a subscription to their favorite streaming service, the My Planet Pass takes the intimidation out of environmental giving,” said Kate Williams, CEO of 1% for the Planet in a press release. Kate Williams hopes this new pass will encourage skiers and snowboarders alike to give back to the environment and help save it, so we can all continue to enjoy the outdoors for decades to come.
The My Planet Pass is available for purchase for $200, $300 and $400 membership levels. For more information and to see the breakdown of the member benefits, visit pass.onepercentfortheplanet.org.
