Alterra Mountain Company’s Ikon Pass is making its way to the Southern Hemisphere with a recent announcement that they are adding Thredbo, in the state of New South Wales, Australia, to their pass. Ikon Pass holders are now able to enjoy seven days of skiing and riding at Thredbo without blackout dates. Ikon Base Pass holders are able to enjoy five days of access with certain blackout dates.

Thredbo is a resort mountain just a little over 300 miles from Australia’s most populous city and waterfront, Sydney, and a little over 130 miles from the nation’s capital city, Canberra. It is also just over 330 miles from Australia’s well-known southern city, Melbourne. The ski area is located in Kosciuszko National Park, inside Australia’s highest mountain range, the Snowy Mountains.

“As we continue to curate partners for the Ikon Pass, we look for destinations that share our passion for the mountains and are dedicated to creating enduring memories for their guests. Thredbo fits right in and we are thrilled to welcome the leading destination in the Southern Hemisphere to the Ikon Pass community,” said Erik Forsell, Chief Marketing Officer of Alterra Mountain Co., in a press release.

“Australia is full of passionate skiers and riders who can now take advantage of an endless winter with the Ikon Pass as they hit the slopes of Thredbo throughout their winter, before experiencing more iconic destinations in the Northern Hemisphere.”

Ikon’s latest addition isn’t random. Vail Resorts, operator of the Epic Pass, acquired Perisher three years ago, further expanding their coverage of continents. Both Thredbo and Perisher are located in Australia’s Snowy Mountains and are only an hour apart from each other. While Perisher is known for being Australia’s largest ski resort, Thredbo is known for having more challenging terrain and better snowmaking capabilities. In general, however, these two mountains are fairly comparable and have had a friendly rivalry for years.

With this new addition, the Ikon Pass now covers more than 64,000 skiable acres worldwide, from 27 different mountain resorts. By joining the Ikon Pass, Thredbo is affiliated with some of the US’s most prestigious skiing resorts, including Colorado’s Aspen Mountain and Canada’s Tremblant. Skiers can now take advantage of long winter ski days across the globe.

“The Ikon Pass is a sensational option for skiers and snowboarders who love to travel to incredible mountain experiences and we look forward to providing Ikon Pass holders access to Australia’s premier snow destination,” said Jordan Rodgers, General Manager of Thredbo.
