The Best Men’s All-Mountain Skis of 2022: Faction Dictator 2.0
Despite the hardcore name and top sheets, the Faction Dictator 2.0 is a surprisingly forgiving, playful, and fun ski.
Faction has crafted top-of-the-line performance freeride and freestyle skis since its founding in 2006. Created by Australian designer and skier Tony McWilliam and his team of Swiss, Canadian, American, and other international big mountain skiers, Faction has been a by-skiers-for-skiers company since day one. The name, The Faction Collective, speaks to this identity. McWilliam’s mission was to fracture off of the mainstream ski industry and do things a little differently in order to serve a core community of dedicated skiers. The Faction Collective aims to be unique and unifying at the same time.
The company was originally based in Verbier, Switzerland, where their headquarters remain today. Since their founding, Faction has expanded its reach and now has bases in Breckenridge, Colo. and Shoreditch, London, and ships 25,000 skis a year to over 35 countries around the world.
This expansion and rise in popularity took off when Faction teamed up with French pro skier Candide Thovex in 2012. Thovex is one of the most well known athletes in the freeskiing world, having won the Freeride World Tour in 2010 and all of the X-Games disciplines—Big Air, Halfpipe, and Slopestyle—and starring in tons of ski films. Together, Faction and Thovex created the Candide Thovex Signature Series, an award-winning line of park, all-mountain, and backcountry skis.
In addition to producing top of the line skis, Faction has also made a name for itself in the entertainment department. With over 39K subscribers on YouTube (not to mention Thovex’s 357K subscribers), the team has produced a three season web series, dozens of short films, and released its first feature film, This Is Home, in 2018. Their second film, The Collective, came out in Fall 2019.
